For tension loading, matrix splitting was tested on notched rectangular specimens of unidirectional carbon fiber-reinforced epoxy T300-914C. Crack propagation, notch opening displacements, and specimen elongation were measured in dependence on tensile force. Crack behavior was analyzed by acoustic emission measurements, X-ray, ultrasonic and REM-photographs. Analytical methods, based on linear fracture mechanics, were used to evaluate the stress intensity factors, the energy release rate, and its splitting for mode 1 and 2. The established interaction diagrams describe the crack initiation at the notch tip of unidirectional laminates.
