A multistage, combined test and estimation filter that maintains the expectation domain of a flying object at a given value by adapting the scanning time, was designed. It is shown how the accuracy of a Kalman filter is affected by maneuver parameters and scanning time. This allows the prediction of the efficiency of a procedure with adaptive scanning time. The effect of a filter mismatch on the estimation accuracy of the filter, and the recognition of such a mismatch using the residue process are discussed. Considering the variation width of the maneuvering parameters, the proposed six-stage adaptive filter proves to be a favorable compromise between detection sensitivity and efficient measuring data reduction. The efficiency of the adaptive procedure was demonstrated by simulations, and the effect of test parameters, fixed by the user, were determined.
