Information Systems Analysis and Design Based on an Object-Oriented Framework

Four studies are presented: a framework and method of Object Oriented (OO)information Systems Analysis and Design (SAD); an architecture for information systems and CASE (Computer Aided Software Engineering) tools based on an OO framework; a grammar for OOSAD; the IFIP case. Real world entities are modeled as objects with Entity Relationship (ER) diagrams, state transition diagrams and a formal grammar. Steps in OO development are defined corresponding to the framework. This yields a method for OOSAD. An architecture for OO information systems, which is structured in layers, each layer representing specific concepts of the OOSAD framework, is described. The architecture leads to specifications for CASE tools, that may be constructed for supporting development of information systems. With these CASE tools it will be possible to specify (well known diagram techniques) information systems independently of the implementation environment (programming language and database management system). Examples of mappings of ER models and state transition diagrams to a relational database environment and object oriented programming language are described. The extended Backus-Nauer form is used to specify a formal gammar derived from the OOSAD framework. An illustration of the application of the OOSAD method is given by means of the IFIP case.
