Research Activities and Results of the NHK Science and Technical ResearchLaboratories

The organizational structure of the Japanese Broadcasting Corporation's (NHK)Science and Technical Research Laboratories is described and their research programs are discussed in the three areas of: (1) research into new broadcasting services, (2) research to improve existing broadcasting, and (3) research for future broadcasting services and auxiliary infrastructure technologies. The programs outlined include high definition TV, a digital video tape recorder, digital compression techniques, satellite digital broadcasting, FM multiplex broadcasting, antenna design, optical fiber broadcasting system, portable digital SNG, speech synthesis systems, three dimensional TV, image recognition and synthesis, architectural acoustics, machine translations, optoelectronics for display and signal processing, and semiconductor devices and materials.
