An investigation using a cylinder of a V-type liquid-cooled engine was conducted to observe the behavior of the cylinder when operated under preignition conditions. The effects of the follow¬ing variables were investigated:fuel-air ratio, power output, aromatic content of fuel, engine speed, mixture temperature, and preignition source. The power outputs at which preignition would cause complete piston failure for the selected engine operating conditions and the types of failure encountered when using various values of clearance between the piston and the cylinder barrel were determined.
