摘要

The disturbance of the stress field by rivets in main structura Jmembers of aircraft, e.g. spar booms, may cause strain gauges to give a misleading indication of the stresses outside the immediate area which they cover. The data provided here from photo-elastic examination of several typical cases of stress disturbance are intended for application whenever strain-gauges are used in estimating the resultant tension in members during loading tests.nThe cases investigated weren(a) Open hole, 2/16in. diameter on centre line of bar 1 in. wide,n(b) similar hole witli a press-fit rivet,n(c) single row of rivets, offsetn(i) snug-fitting (ii) force fit,n(d) double row of staggered rivetsn(i) loose-fitting rivetsn(ii) press-fit and easy-fit rivets in the same bar.
