Model tests were carried out in steel tubes of St 35 quality, and in welded boiler plate tubes with inner diameters ranging from 100 to 720 mm and wall thicknesses of 5 and 10 mm, to determine the resistivity of steel structural members to interior detonation loads. The influence of charger and container geometry was investigated for tubes open at both ends. The specific loading volume is found to be 0.72 kg/cu m atm, respectively 0.515 kg/cu m atm (kg explosive per cubic meter enclosed space and atm static operating pressure), as allowable or respectively burst loading volume. These results are compared with a formula for closed steel containers. Materials for load alleviating inner linings are investigated.
