Domestic Electricity in detached houses. Metering of electricity use in 66 detached houses and of the effects of replacing domestic appliances

The objective of this investigation has been to measure domestic electricity use in a number of detached houses having direct electric heating, and to investigate the changes in that use resulting from replacement of a number of larger items of electrical equipment, such as refrigerators, freezers, washers, and dishwashers, in order to see what effects the newer and more efficient products available on the market can have in practice. The major saving were found to be made by replacement of refrigerators, freezers or combination refrigerators/freezers. Replacing dishwashers by more modern machines also resulted in a significant reduction in energy use, particularly if the total use of hot water for both the dishwasher and the kitchen tap is included. 6 refs, 81 figs, 59 tabs
