8.4 MW Modulator/Regulator Power Systems for the Electron Cyclotron Heating211 Facility Upgrade at DIII-D

Over the next three years the DIII-D National Fusion Facility at General Atomics211u001ewill upgrade its electron cyclotron heating (ECH) capability from the present 3 211u001eMW at 110 GHz to 10 MW of injected microwave power. There will be ten gyrotron 211u001etubes supplied by five 8.4 MW modulator/regulator (M/R) power systems. The 211u001eproject has gained considerable leverage from the acquisition of surplus hardware 211u001efrom the MFTF program that was conducted at LLNL in the early 1980s. One of these 211u001esystems had been refurbished and converted for use as an ECH power supply 211u001eearlier. The experience gained and the lessons learned from operating that system 211u001ehave proved valuable in guiding the engineering of the new systems. This paper 211u001eprovides an overview of the power system design and a report on the present 211u001estatus of the project.
