A method is described for the analysis of vanadium in graphite, involving no prior ashing of the sample and no chemical separations. The graphite sample is irradiated in the pile, together with a suitably chosen vanadium standard, for 4 mins. At the end of this time, the activity due to the vanadium in the sample and the standard is determined on the normal β-counting equipment, and the decay of the 3.7 minute 52V is followed for several half-lives. Prom the relative activities of sample and standard the percentage vanadium in the graphite is calculated. It is shown that, provided the graphite samples are homogeneous, reproducible results can be easily obtained. Alternatively, the method may be of use for determining the vanadium content of small samples of graphite, e.g. with a view to testing homogeneity.
