A gaseous oxidation-reduction process, whereby sintered UO2 pellets can be pulverized by a chemical, nonaqueous, nonmechanical method, was scaled up to a 2-1/2-kg level.nThe procedure for pulverizing refractory UO2 bodies was found equally suit¬able for the comminution of fissia, a simulated spent reactor fuel. The latter material was fabricated from a mixture of UO2 and representative fission prod¬ucts, in the form of stable isotopes.
