INVESTIGATION OF HYDRIDING PARAMETERS STUDY OF THE EFFECTS OF MINOR ALLOY ADDITIONS AND HYDRIDING CYCLE VARIATIONS ON THE HYDRIDING BEHAVIOR AND BRITTLENESS OF THE DELTA AND EPSILON HYDRIDES OF ZIRCONIUM
This cracking phenomenon is more pronounced at higher hydrogen concentrations, and the current interest is primarily in material with an NH value of 6.0 or higher.nStudies have shown that fine grained starling material, either pure or alloyed zirconium, can be hydrided with a much lower incidence of cracking. General Electric found that the addition of a small amount of carbon to zirconium metal produced a fine grained alloy that could be hydrided with a very low incidence of cracking during hydriding. Atomics international currently employs the carbon addition in their SNAP fuel element production facility.
