摘要

Studies have been made on the post-irradiative high pressure polymerization of acrylamide, using gamma or electron beam irradiation. Radicals formed by radiation of Monomeric acrylamide were "frozen" at -198 F, and subsequently polymerized at pressures up to 500,000 psi, and temperatures varying from ambient to l50oC High pressure polymerization gave large increases in molecular weight over non-pressurized systems; in some cases a 100% increase was observed. Molecular weight measurements were made by determining the viscosity of dilute aqueous solutions of the polyacrylamide. Double bond content was determined by a modified bromine titration. Polymer precipitation methods were also used for characterization purposes. Due to the small size of the polymer samples (500 mg.), no physical measurements were made.
