CHEMICAL PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH THE USE OF BRIDGEWATER CANAL WATER FOR COOLING PURPOSES AT THE DARESBURY NUCLEAR PHYSICS LABORATORY

The paper describes the problems arising from the use of the Bridgewater Canal for cooling purposes. The use of chlorination and sulphur dioxide dechlorination to reduce fouling of the circuits is discussed, and the precautions necessary to ensure that discharge of effluent complies with the requirements of the Cheshire River Board are also outlined.
