DEVELOPMENT OF FAST NEUTRON ACTIVATION ANALYSIS FOR LIQUID LOOP SYSTEMS

A liquid loop activation analysis system has been constructed and tested for several materials. Sensitivity of the analysis is 3 to 10 times greater than the equivalent sensitivity in the pneumatic transfer system, depending upon flow rate and counting geometry. The flow rate should be relatively low to reduce interferences and increase sensitivity. Application of this technique to several materials has been shown to be possible. Further studies should optimize the irradiation and geometry parameters and establish the basis for design of field systems. Finally, systems should be installed in actual industrial situations to demonstrate that the laboratory measurements can be practically used in on-line situations in industrial plants.
