摘要

The preparation and characterization of the fuel samples for an irradiation test of fission gas swelling in tungsten-doped uranium monocarbide is described. Details are given on the arc melting and casting and the zone melting processes, by which the 0.33-in. Diameter fuel slugs were prepared. Tungsten was added, and the carbon-to-metal (U + W) stoichiometric was controlled by a zone leveling procedure. The purpose of the tungsten addition was to provide a dispersion of very fine particles to trap fission gas bubbles and limit swelling. Electron micrographs are presented which show the presence of fine particles. The fuel samples have been further characterized by chemical analysis, optical metallographic, length measurement, and density determinimation.
