摘要

Under U. S. Atomic Energy Commission, Northwest Pulp and Paper Association and Washington State University support a method has been developed for the identification and tracking of one type of wood fiber in the presence of one or more other types of wood fibers. The method, which relies upon the application of radioisotope techniques, was designed for purposes of obtaining a better understanding of the potential sources of stream pollution in the pulp and paper industry and for reducing these possible sources of stream pollution by means of in-plant process control.nThe method eliminates those problems usually associated with in-plant handling of radioisotopes and concern over compliance with federal, state, and local regulations dealing with radioisotope disposal in public waterways. It permits the tagging of fibers and their subsequent tracing without the introduction of any radioactive material into the pulp and paper mill pro cessing system. The technique involves treating a small sample of wood chips or fibers with a metallic salt, removal of excess additive, dispersion of the treated chips or pulp into the mill system at any desired point and subsequent collection of fiber samples downstream in the process lines and effluent streams. Neutron activation analysis techniques are utilized to ascertain the amount, if any, of treated fibers present in the collected samples.
