A Fast Versatile Preampliller for Use in Particle Physics

A preamplifier with outstanding characteristics is described. It is built around an NE-592 monolithic integrated circuit. The amplifier has a negative output (0 to -5 V, typical), inverting as well as non-inverting inputs, excellent linearity, easily tailored gain and input impedance, 50n drive capability (delay line clipping may be used) and a total assembled cost of less than $25. It is readily adaptable to many detection schemes.
