Laws affecting the formation and organization of health care institutions in the six States composing DHEW Region V are analyzed as part of a 19-volume study to explain and to identify the legal and organizational problems likely to confront the planners and sponsors of health care institutions throughout the United States. The six States in Region V are: Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin. Two kinds of laws are examined for each State: laws authorizing the organizational forms potentially available to health care institutions and laws regulating the formation and operation of health care institutions. The emphasis is on each State's legal climate for health maintenance organizations. The relevant provisions of the statutes are described by State. Four traditional, legal organizational forms for health care institutions are described for each State: for-profit corporations, nonprofit corporations, general partnerships, and limited partnerships. Other forms of government regulation are outlined.
