In support of the belief that direct current superconducting power transmission lines (dc SPTL) will provide the most economical and most efficient means of transporting bulk power underground, the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory (LASL) is developing a prototype dc SPTL with a nominal rating of 5,000 MVA (50 kA at 100 kV). The LASL model line is described, some of the advantages of this system vis-a-vis other cable systems for transporting bulk power, and details of some of the program plans and progress to date are listed. Finally, studies of a realistic transmission system that support the optimistic outlook for the dc SPTL application are described. (ERA citation 02:051483)
