An atmospheric pressure fluidized-bed combustor has been proposed as an alternative to the conventional pulverized coal boiler equipped with its tailend scrubbing system. The major potential advantages of fluidized-bed combustion are the removal of SO sub 2within the fluidized-bed using limestone,and the lowering of NO/sub x/due to lower combustion temperatures. In addition,other potential advantages include high volumetric combustion rates and high heat transfer,resulting in possible equipment size reduction. These advantages suggest that fluidized bed combustion may have application to steam generators. The purpose of this project was to collect available data and to establish,where feasible,criteria for the design of a fluidized bed combustor (FBC) steam generating system and,in addition,to identify those areas where additional activity is required. In performing this critical review,the fluidized bed steam generation process was examined with respect to six areas:Bed design,combustion of coal,heat transfer,environmental aspects,materials and economics. It is concluded that:The fluidized bed combustor is a feasible approach for producing steam to generate electricity;insufficient information presently exists to design and construct a prototype system that will have a high probability of success;an adequate economic evaluation of a fluidized bed system versus a conventional pulverized coal boiler equipped with tailend scrubbing has not been made--and should be;and it can very likely comply with existing federal SO sub 2and NO/sub x/air pollution criteria.
