The material resulting from the reactions between the leaded layer in dry-box gloves and nitric acid was investigated. The dry material decomposed violently at temperatures ranging from 60 to 130 °C. The material exploded when subjected to an impact load of 50 kilogram-centimeters, or when it was confined and ignited with a fuse. Unconfined, the material burns violently when ignited with a spark. Seven different reducing agents and ordinary tap water were investigated as deactivating agents. The water soak was found to be most effective.
