The potential of small wind energy conversion systems (SWECS) in a regional utility was investigated. Kansas Gas and Electric Company (KG and E), an investor-owned company with 1800-MW generating capacity, served as the case study subject. Eight previous studies that evaluated SWECS as an integral part of the generatin mix of a utility system were reviewed and summarized. A wind characteristics analysis was performed for the KG and E service territory. A hypothetical wind machine with a cut-in velocity of 8 mph and a rated velocity of 25 mph was selected and analyzed in the Wichita, Kansas wind regime. Five years of concurrent wind/load data were used to simulate 15 years of KG and E system operation with and without SWECS.
