A numerical procedure has been developed to obtain information regarding the hypervelocity impact of a sphere onto a plate by considering the corresponding plane strain problem. The method consists of treating a rod as a superposition of an infinite chain of spheres and then numerically unfolding information about a single sphere. This technique has been used to calculate the peak pressure distribution when the impact is normal to the plate surface and excellent results were obtained. When extended to oblique impact problems, physically reasonable results are obtained but at this time no independent checks are available. (ERA citation 81:026023)
