The Sulfate Regional Experiment:Regional Air Quality Modeling Documentation

This volume provides additional documentation of the Sulfate Regional Advection and Diffusion Scheme (SURADS) and is meant to be a supplement to Section 8 (Air Quality Modeling) of the Sulfate Regional Experiment, Report of Findings, EPRI Report EA-1901. Important factors in three of the SURADS model components are described. In particular, parts of the Meteorological Discretization System (MDS), the Air Quality Initialization System (AQIS), and the Numerical Integration System (NIS) of the SURADS are detailed. In the MDS, temporally and spatially varying vertical eddy diffusivity is determined from wind speed, surface temper-ature, temperature soundings, and surface roughness. Wind fields at five levels in the vertical are interpolated each hour from twice-daily rawinsonde data. Calculations of winds required that the horizontal divergence be minimized to approach zero in each level of the wind field while the vorticity is maintained.
