For a given valve design (internal profile and ring setting) the dynamic performance, which depends strongly on the piping t/h response, can be judged only in terms of a coupled problem between valve and piping hydraulic transient. To fulfill this aim an analytical model was developed (valve dynamic model coupled with an existing thermal-hydraulics code for the upstream piping) that provides the means to assess the influence of the main parameters on the valve stability: ring setting, upstream fluid conditions (vapour or liquid discharge), upstream piping length (between pressurizer and safety valves). At last, the performance of a spring loaded safety valve may be greatly improved by the introduction of a pneumatic or electromagnetic assistance device. (ERA citation 11:000491)
