Many of the weapons concepts proposed for future defense weapons will require bursts of energy at high power and at high repetition rates. This research program has led the way in demonstrating the feasibility of using energy storage to power such systems. An inductive store and a new energy transfer circuit were used to produce a 75-MW, 5-kHz pulse train at a 1- omega load. With a new high-power opening switch, such transfer circuits have the potential to operate at the 10-GW level. The major results of this program were a increased understanding of the inductive energy storage and opening switch problem, a demonstration of this technology at a very high pulse reptition rate, and the development of new transfer circuits featuring high efficiency and simplicity.
