This report summarizes the results of EPRI-sponsored research which investigated the technical feasibility and cost effectiveness of using advanced compressor control techniques to provide improved energy end use efficiencies and peak demand reductions in large commercial and industrial compressor systems. The control techniques addressed included the timely modulation of compressor suction, interstage and discharge pressures (for cooling and refrigeration systems) and discharge pressures (for air and gas compression systems) to match daily and seasonal variations in application requirements. Other compressor optimization techniques investigated included the use of simple turnoff of unneeded compressor capacity and selection of the most efficient compressor(s) to match instantaneous loads.
