摘要

The desire to determine general ecosystem effects of perturbations in the arctic resulting from energy-related development is the impetus for this research which quantifies the patterns of water and nutrient flux from fellfield through tussock tundra into riparian plant communities. The evaluation of the effect of this mass flux of water and nutrients on plant productivity is one of the objectives of this research. The second major goal is to quantify the effects of changes in the flux of water and nutrient flux resulting from slope perturbations such as increased water flow, fertilizer application, and surface disturbance on important ecosystem processes including primary production and nutrient uptake. The research is based on response of physical, physiological, demographic, and ecosystem processes to environmental change. The emphasis is on studies which will yield general results to reduce the reliance on case studies when new perturbations or energy related development in new geographical areas are anticipated.
