Technical Assessment of a Direct Contact Heat Exchanger as an Energy Conservation Retrofit Option

The objective of this report is to present the results of an engineering analysis of the energy conservation potential of a direct contact heat recovery process applied to residential sized warm air furnaces. A laboratory study was conducted using both a gas-fired furnace and an oil-fired furnace. A series of measurements were performed to measure various parameters associated with the test furnaces, both in a baseline condition and with direct contact heat exchangers added to the systems.
