This dissertation is divided into two parts. Part I describes the synthesis and characterization of a series of dinuclear transition metal complexes containing bridging dithiomethylene ligands. The reaction of these compounds toward various nucleophiles and oxidizing agents is also presented. Conclusions are drawn about the structure and reactivity of these compounds based on the results of a molecular orbital calculation. Part II of this dissertation describes the attempted synthesis of the iron carbyne (iron carbon triple bond)-containing compound Cp(CO)FeCSCH sub 3 . Although unsuccessful this study resulted in the synthesis of several new compounds containing iron carbon bonds and resulted in developing a new synthetic route to Cp(CO)Fe(S sub 2 CSCH sub 3 ). 148 references, 9 figures, 9 tables.
