The present invention relates to an improved process for the manufacture of acetic acid and methyl acetate by carbonylation of methanol in the gas phase in the presence of catalysts containing nickel and in the presence of chlorine, bromine or iodine or volatile compounds of these halogens as promoters. The invention also relates to new catalysts suitable for the manufacture of acetic acid and methyl acetate by gas phase carbonylation.
