Home Equity Conversion: Enhancing Legal Awareness

The paper addresses a project undertaken to enhance the awareness of the legal community about home equity conversion. Attorneys were educated regarding home equity conversion through (1) legal education programs and training sessions, (2) articles in bar publications, (3) the provision of information to CLE institutes, and (4) publication of an attorney's research guide to home equity conversion. The 'Attorney's Guide to Home Equity Conversion' was prepared and widely disseminated to the legal community; articles on home equity conversion appeared in two publications for attorneys and two more articles are scheduled to appear in major bar publications; three emerging projects received technical assistance to educate attorneys in their areas, establish their counseling programs, and resolve legal issues raised in their programs; legislation regarding home equity conversion was tracked and critiqued; and information about pending proposals has been disseminated. It is concluded that the availability of the 'Attorney's Guide to Home Equity Conversion' has made accurate, practical, basic information about home equity conversion available to attorneys.
