Anaerobic SBR (Sequenching Batch Reactor) Treatment of Coal Conversion Wastewaters: Sixth Quarterly Report

The acclimation studies have been completed in the six 2-L reactors. However, three of these have been continued and are operated with a CCW feed mixed with glucose. The addition of glucose, a readily degradable substrate, increases organisms growth, and promotes cometabolism of more difficult to degrade constituents. Four automatically operated 4-L AnSBR's are being monitored. Two are treating only phenol and two are treating a mixture of coal conversion wastewaters (CCW) constituents. Many serum bottle studies have been completed and are continuing. In addition, several 1.5-L mass cultures have been started to grow large quantities of organism acclimated to a single CCW constituent. These acclimated organisms will be used in future kinetic studies and to seed other reactors. (ERA citation 12:028280)
