In the real world of software development it is often impossible to follow a full-fledged development program based on sound software engineering principles, due to budget, schedule, or even management constraints. Yet how can you provide a high quality product with sufficient documentation without following such a program. This paper describes some of the problems encountered when software engineering principles are not followed, then briefly reviews those principles, and finally suggests some very effective techniques to use when you cannot follow a formal development plan. 4 refs.
