Treatment of Low-Level Contaminated Landfill Leachate Using Advanced OxidationProcesses

The Strasburg Landfill Superfund Site is located in Newlin and Bradfordtownships, Chester County, Pennsylvania. The site was closed in 1980. It was not until 1988 that the site was placed in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's National Priority List when leachate runoff into a nearby creek was discovered and contaminants were detected in groundwater and surface water. Chlorinated solvents and simple aromatics were commonly manifested. Treatment technologies for the prevention of further migration of contaminants into the environment are currently under evaluation by the U.S. Army Engineer District, Baltimore. Occasional failures of the current air stripper system to meet effluent concentrations have occurred, and in accordance with the Record of Decision, an advanced oxidation process (AOP) system should be evaluated as a potential replacement of the air stripping unit.
