Analysis of Responses of a Small Shock Platform Subjected to Underwater Explosions

The dynamic shock loading response of a small floating platform subjected to a series of low level, underwater explosions has been assessed. The platform was designed as a cost-effective and rapid means for facilitating the underwater shock response assessment of naval hull material and shipboard equipment. The test series comprised ten underwater explosions of the same charge size and charge/platform geometry and the shock motions of the platform were measured using accelerometers mounted on the platform bulkheads and deckplate. From the acceleration histories, an average kick-off' velocity and shock response spectra were derived, these parameters characterising the response of the platform. A theoretical kick-off velocity was also calculated and showed good correlation with the measured kick-off' velocity at 1.10 and 1. 16 m/s respectively. The shock response spectrum for the charge size and geometry used in this work meets the requirement for shock level 1 of the proposed Australian Shock Standard, where level 1 is the minimum shock resistance measure for shipboard equipment used on Royal Australian Navy vessels.
