Gallium-Containing Estrogens as Receptor-Based Breast Tumor Imaging Agents

We have conceived of an approach to prepare novel compounds for the estrogen receptor that might be useful in the imaging and diagnosis of breast cancer, by the creation of steroidal-based imaging agents that take advantage of the desirable properties of gallium as a radioisotope. After successful preparation of the carbon skeletons needed to assemble several these compounds, we have been unable to prepare any of the proposed gallium-containing structures. After an exhaustive effort upon these systems, we have shifted our focus toward developing analogous technetium-containing systems, which have emerged with a greater potential for developing receptor-targeted imaging agents. During this past year, the principal investigator has been awarded his doctorate degree and has prepared three manuscripts for publication. As of the time of this writing, one of these manuscripts has been published and another has been accepted for publication.
