摘要

This paper examines the effects of a renewable energy policy on American foreign policy. As the United States weans itself from oil, it will accelerate the already occurring geopolitical shift in the Middle East from a region dominated by the United States to one that will be dominated by China. As a result of this shift, the United States will lose access and influence in the region and realignments will occur among nation states, leading the Saudis to grow their military and accelerate their quest for nuclear weapons. No longer encumbered by the United States, Saudi Arabia's domestic policies will shift towards the more extreme versions of Wahhabism, which will lead to an even harder stance toward Israel. The paper will detail the importance of oil to the United States and the world; describe how oil is integral to the U.S. economy; provide historical information on how various policy makers and Presidents formed policies to ensure the free flow of, and access to, oil in the Middle East; examine the feasibility, acceptability, and suitability of a renewable energy policy in the United States; chronicle China's rise to prominence in recent years and its expanding presence in the Middle East; examine Saudi Arabia's concerns and national interests regarding oil; and discuss how an American renewable energy policy will only hasten the eventual turnover of American control of the Persian Gulf to the Chinese.
