Its importance lies not only in the increased force required to move the machinery, hut also in the rapid wear that inevitably accompanies increased friction. The phenomenon is characterised by the fact that the friction returns to normal once the stiction has been broken.nThe rate of increase of static friction during the stationary period can be very rapid, and the workers at the Battelle Memorial Institute (1), experimenting with O-rings, have shown that after 5 minutes delay doubling of the static friction is by no means uncommon. According to these same results the stiction depended on the initial compression of the sealing ring rather than on the hydraulic pressure.
