The Effects of Skin Friction and Roughness on the Losses in Centrifugal Pump Volutes

The surface quality of the volute of a centrifugal pump is not likely to have any appreciable influence on the performance of the impeller so the skin friction on its surface, like other losses taking place in the volute or delivery nozzle, would merely reduce the head available at the delivery flange without changing the impeller performance.nOther losses besides skin friction take place in the volute. They include the inevitable energy losses in the process of smoothing out the non-uniform velocities leaving the impeller vane passages.
