The early arc furnaces of fifty years ago wore very simple compared with, these of the present day, hut in many cases operating practice has not changed to take full advantage of design improvements. The old furnaces often had only one voltage tap, about 100 volts, whereas the most modern furnaces have as many as 21 taps with on-load tap changing. The largest furnace installed to date in this country is rated at 25 MVA with a maximum' secondary voltage tap giving 450 volts between electrodes at 35,000 amps.
