The study of imides and aluminum complex imido acids as high temperature grease thickeners is presented. Part of this effort was to study the effect of the chemical and physical properties of a thickener on the physical properties of a grease.nThe preliminary work on this study is described. The preparation of 14 imido acids as well as the formulations for a series of greases by a variety of methods is described. Variations in the formulation of an aluminum complex imido acid grease have resulted in a grease which ran 7374 hours on the Pope Spindle bearing rig at 500°F and 10,000 rpm.nWe found by optical and electron microscopic examination that most of these greases were made of fairly large rod-like particles. The data was limited, but we show a direct relationship between the length of these particles and the consistency of the grease.
