There is a need for solid evidence bearing on how to arrange the materials for optimum learning. Present day programming efforts are either theoretically derived rules of thumb with little independent check on the derivation (Mathetics) or completely empirical inventions worked out on the spot by programmers themselves (Linear, Branching).
