Information Transfer in Display-Control Systems VIII. A Summary Review of the DEI Technique and a Series of Studies into Information Transfer Through Electrocutaneous Transduction

The logic, development, reliability, validity, and discriminating power of the Display Evaluative Technique, a technique for quantitatively measuring the ability of the displays in a system to transfer information to the system operator and of the operator to act on that information is first described. Then seven studies into the potential of electrocutaneous information transfer for Signal Corps' equipment systems are reported. The results of these studies support the contention that information transfer through electrical impulses applied to the skin of the system operator could possess considerable merit in certain applications, particularly if this type of signaling system is coupled with a visual or an auditory signal.
