In this paper we should like to describe our preliminary observations of a much simplier chemical system, chlorine-fluorine. Fredenhagan (2) observed that chlorine-fluorine mixtures can produce a flame when they are sparked. Ruff (3) observed that chlorine and fluorine will react at temperatures below 250°, and that moisture apparently plays an important role in the course of the reaction.nAs it turns out, computation shows that over the combustible range, C1F3 turns out to be only a minor product. Therefore, there is little change in the molecular weight. Hence, one might expect the density and thus the refractive index to be a function primarily of the temperature., making the system particularly attractive for optical studies.
