Pressure Sealing Closures for Full Pressure Protective Suit Assemblies

Longitudinal and circular pressure sealing closures were designed and developed for full pressure protective assemblies from a design concept provided by the Aerospace Medical Research Laboratories, invention disclosure number 66/588. This study consisted of (1) designing pressure closure devices, (2) selecting suitable materials for the fabrication of the sealing closure parts and the cylinders to include the closures, (3) selecting an appropriate fabrication process for the closure sealing parts, and (4) fabricating and testing the breadboard and demonstration models containing either the circular or longitudinal closures. An EPDM elastomeric material was found to be suitable for the fabrication of the closure sealing parts which were molded using an established molding technique. The fabricated breadboard and demonstration models passed successfully the required tests wherein leak rates were determined from 0 to 5 psig, and exposure to pressure up to 12 psig, were performed.
