The Role of Nutrition in Vesical Calculus Formation

Bladder stone disease is a formerly widespread condition, afflicting primarily children under ten years of age, which is now restricted to certain regions of the Mideast and Asia. It has been studied in Thailand where it is a significant cause of surgery. Research to date has suggested that nutrition has a primary role in the etiology of bladder stone but the specific nutritional imbalance or deficiency is still unknown. This project is attempting to produce bladder stones in laboratory animals by feeding diets closely resembling the nutrient pattern consumed in areas such as Thailand as established by the ICNND nutrition survey. This approach has notbeen previously employed. While the test diets have not resulted in bladder stone, kidney calcification has occurred and seems to be promoted by the high starch (rice) diets. Changes in urinary stone matrix precursors are being studied. (Author)
