The project has essentially been an evaluation of the various nondestructive testing techniques considered most applicable to the inspection of the three primary closures used for sealing highly toxic chemical munitions. The three closures are the press-fit doubled-ball closure, the circumferential TIG weld, and the projection resistance weld. For the press-fit doubled-ball closure, a definite ultrasonic procedure has been established. For the circumferential tungsten/inert-gas weldment and the deep-seated projection resistance weldment, the results of this study have provided the direction required for followup investigations. Ultrasonic techniques, Krypton diffusion, and electromagnetic methods were evaluated under this program. Considerable data have been acquired that will be utilized when attempting to implement the results of this study into quality assurance inspection system. (Author)
