A synopsis of the major microelectronic production technologies is presented. The details of making monolithic integrated circuits and thin- and thick-film circuits are explored with comments on the equipment and materials used as well as the size of the products and various details of the circuits. In particular, the discourse in hybrid thick-film technology comments on the reasons for the use of the numerous materials in the process and the limitations as well as the advantages of the process. The structure of the thick-film resistor and the sintering furnace is described. The paper attempts to provide those involved in the designing of circuits for eventual engineering into hybrids some understanding of the processes available, their limitations, and advantages. The paper is structured to provide the design engineer with a qualified concept of hybrid manufacture to enable him to design his circuit to use a particular technology or choose the most suitable one for the job.
